Great visual resources suitably differentiated for year 1. Read the Blue Balloon and sequence the pictures and use time connectives to retell. Write a list and captions using words to describe the balloon changing shape. Link to the new curriculum and used expanded noun phrases and or adjectives. Use phonics and sounds to match words to pictures. As creative starters to the unit -teachers can write a message on a helium balloon from each child and release in outdoor playground - ‘This balloon is indestructable. Please look after it!’ Wait and see if anyone replies to the message. Blow up a balloon and release in hall for inspiration to dance and movement in P.E. Also includes ideas for problem solving in maths using balloons as inspiration.

Year 2 Writing Narrative Where the Wild Things Are Film and Book Exemplar text to introduce children to narrative writing - called Voyage and Return. Both the film and book are used simultaneously to learn about the main character and write a narrative. An excellent powerpoint with more than 15 slides demonstrates how to write descriptive scenes from the story, a narrative, character traits, and a success ladder. The exemplar text meets the requirements of English New Curriculum objectives. Explicit reference has been made to grammatical features including varying sentence types, conjunctions, words with suffixes, and the use of common exception words. Teachers may use the text in the imitation stage, innovate to where the main character meets a new wild thing, and then invent their own voyage and return narrative. An excellent film and text to use to promote boys writing.

Year 2 Guided Reading This is a complete 5 week unit of work around the text Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish. It is suited to guided reading taught in a Reciprocal Reading approach. It is also useful to use to practice SATS style questions for Year 2 working at greater depth and within. Also adaptable for year 3. The story is linked to materials, science and rockets, and sustainable environmental issues. It is very suitable for boys because of the dinosaur theme. It is also a good book to use if you are doing a fossils unit or learning about climate change. The questions are written like the Paper SATs method, where there is a short text and then questions to answer below. The other included resources for each week, support additional activities that you may consider doing as a carousel during your guided reading independent work. A character description in week 5 is included to support creative writing opportunities. Definitely a good book to move on reluctant or EAL readers . This is a Tes recommended 5 star resource. The Tunnel by Anthony Browne English Writing Unit. An excellent 2 week unit of work for KS1/Year 2 to teach about bravery, sibling rivalry, compassion, similarities and differences. Rose is afraid of the unknown but she faces her fears to rescue her brother. This unit teaches diary writing, poetry, and creative narrative writing. It is suitable for year 2 , (although easily adaptable to years below) and closely matched to the TAFS and standards. There is an example of writing provided for written lessons. Lots of immersion activities are included so pupils can demonstrate empathy with the main character. This allows for pupils to write deeply and creatively and for Haps to achieve greater depth. .

Non-fiction labels and captions or narrative text - familiar settings.Retell and sequence. Describe the main character Sam or Jeremy. Write a list of rules for the bully Jeremy to follow. Write a letter to Sam advising him how to behave if someone is mis treating you or bullying you inside school, in the playground, or out of school. Link the story to Anti bullying week. Make a rosette from Jeremy to Sam as a good will gesture. The main characters (jeremy, sam, old lady, park keeper) can be made into stick puppets to role play the story successfully.

Africa Topic Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters- A play script about an African Tale. Are you learning about Africa? Have you focused on learning a text in a different cultural setting? If so, this is the perfect and inspirational play script for you. It includes parts for 120 (a four form entry school), although this can be easily adapted, altered and edited. The resource includes relevant songs within an African setting including popular and contemporary songs that will add and enliven the show. These have been carefully selected according to the theme in each scene e.g envy, jealousy, beauty, king’s procession etc. There are clear guidance for props, staging and costumes that may be suitable for parents/carers or teachers to provide. These include pots, masks, drapes, spears, shields, plants and thrones. Hope this is useful and many thanks for purchasing this resource. Was used for end of key stage 1. Teaching Dragon Poetry and descriptive writing to year 2 will be extra fun following this outstanding unit of work. There are excellent creative ideas included in here, to enthuse children into writing interesting descriptions of dragons, and supporting them to writing missing posters about different types of dragons they’ve created themselves. They will begin by going on a dragon egg hunt, write a poem about what’s inside the egg, and then use the book ‘To Tell A dragon’ to write their own poems using a similar model. Year 2 Planning with differentiation and high order activities for literacy to support the new English curriculum. This is a suitable activity for creative writing in the traditional stories unit or as a short write for character description. Children will have the opportunity to develop and use expanded noun phrases, similes, suffixes, contractions and conjunctions to extend ideas and sentences. A good extension for year 2 is to incorporate a twist in the story and so the good characters (the three billy goats) become bad and the troll becomes good. Can be used before or after the little red riding hood unit also available by the same author on TES. There is also a grammar features success ladder included. It is designed for children to be able to self assess and peer assess when editing, and up-level their own work to meet the expected standards. Suitable for year 2 to achieve 'at' and beyond - Greater Depth standard in writing.

Year 2 Writing unit The children can use this resources to research all about the London Olympic Venues and the Torch relay. Children can be given parts of the information to think of their own caption or headings. It will support them to write a non-fiction piece of writing. It can also be used as part of Geography to find out about in London. This unit was written to celebrate the arrival of the Olympics in 2012. Year 2 Narrative Unit to inspire greater depth and mastery writing skills. An excellent bundle of resources suitable for year 2 and year 3. Includes 5 weeks of planning for English and 5 separate grammar exercises within context of the book to be taught alongside it. A cold writing task begins with writing a narrative(fable) of a fox. An exemplar text is provided (re-written in the past tense to imitate and innovate). There are also other opportunities for independent creative writing pieces integrated in the unit so that children can practice skills and rehearse them independently. Book talk and comprehension activities are also included. The language in the text is ambitious as well as appropriate for children to achieve the TAF statements for the year 2 curriculum. This unit can be adapted to suit lower KS2. Links to films and short clips provide opportunities for non-fiction writing e.g. Recount of how fires start in forests or bush lands. If children have previous experiences of writing instructions- they can apply this by writing 'How to mend a broken wing' instructions or make wings for Magpie to fly in DT. The Day the Crayons Quit is a working at the expected standard reading text for Year 2. This guided reading unit is a wonderful text to use to engage reluctant readers. This reading unit is designed to support the new English Reading Framework. It is suitable for comprehension with looking, clue and thinking questions and encourages children to talk through their answers using a reciprocal approach. The resources have been designed for children to read a few letters at a time and answer literal and inference based questions. There are also other links such as poetry about crayons so that children can experience a range of genres and respond to them. Teachers can allow children to read letters written in the style of the book so there is a 'I quit' letter from the teacher for children to respond to. This work can help towards moderation and assessment purposes and evidence at the end of the year. The unit was taught over 3 weeks and includes visuals for additional activities such as predict what the crayons are saying in speech bubbles. This is an excellent information planning 'All About Whales'. The inspiration for this was from the book the Snail and the Whales by Julia Donaldson. It's a boy friendly text and the children got to keep African snails in the classroom. Leading on from this they learnt an exemplar text about whales, imitated it and then innovated to write their own information text about snails. This unit was linked to grammar features from the new curriculum 2017- 18 for Year 2. It includes using targets to develop use of expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and varied openers. Children structured their writing according to the purpose using headings as questions. The resource includes six weeks of planning, a text map, exemplar text, tool boxing ideas and visuals to support the imitation stage.
